Facial implants are prosthetic appliances deposited under the soft tissue of the patient’s face to modify the underlying structure to improve the appearance of certain aspects of the chin, cheek, or lower jaw.
Dr Behnaz Yazdanfar saysDuring the surgery for a chin implant, the surgeon picks out the applicable shape and size for the implant to improve the patient’s face and encloses it into a pocket over the front of the mandible. The small incision is made along the bottom lower lip to fabricate the pocket and the implant is enclosed insideinside the mouth or within the skin just beneath the chin area.
For a cheek implant surgical procedure an incision will be made either inside the patient’s upper lip or the bottom eyelid. A pouch is then formed and an implant is deposited inside.
A lower-jaw implantation surgery requires internal incisions to be cut on either side of the lower lip to render access for establishing a pocket into which the implant can be deposited.
The severity and duration of discomfort and swelling may vary, depending if another procedure of cosmetic surgery was executed at the same time.
